My kid rented a car for errands this week. The car has a touch screen, an electronic gear changing paddle, and all kinds of alarms. A bell sounds whenever the car perceives that it is too close to another car. There is a wondrous rear view camera. The console has various lights to indicate various different situations.
And it sounds a little bell when we stop in traffic, to alert us that the car in front of us has started moving forward again.
While we were driving yesterday, my kid was plenty alert and scanning, so all the bell did was startle and distract them.
We both started swearing at the car whenever it went “ding!”, which was often.
This was not a good model for the grandchild, who was in the back, in his booster seat. He had already admonished his parent not to say mean things to the other drivers, and now we had to remember not to say mean things to the car, either.
