Herbarium Page

When you go outside with the class, choose a tree. Before you do anything else, look carefully at the tree. Take a picture of the tree. What does the bark look like, and what is the shape of the tree?

Carefully collect a leaf, no more. Make sure you get the whole leaf. Remember always to check with the teacher to see if it is all right to collect the leaf. Place the leaf flat in your journal and bring it back to class. Take an index card and label it with the type of tree, the date, and your name and homeroom. Put it in the leaf press with your index card next to it.

Leaving enough space for your leaf, label your herbarium page with the tree's common name, its Latin name, the tree's shape, the place and date where you found the leaf, and your name.

When the leaf is dry, take it out with tweezers. Glue it carefully on your herbarium page, using a glue stick or Elmer's Glue. Dr. Turner will laminate the page.

When you present your tree paper, show the class the herbarium page in the binder so they can identify the tree themselves the next time.
