Science News Links
I keep looking for science news sites that (a) give current science news
and (b) are readable by fifth graders. Below are some of my picks. Look
at them all. Don't get stuck using just one. They all have their
problems.
- ABCNEWS.com
Science Index (http://abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/index.html) which
is probably my favorite. The articles are pretty easy to read (though
still hard for a fifth grader), and it's mainstream reporting. The "Mad
or Rad" section can be funny and it can be lame.
- Discovery Channel's Discovery
News (http://dsc.discovery.com/news/news.html) has good stories that are
very readable. I also recommend their Animal
Alert (at http://animal.discovery.com/news/news.html) and Ocean
Alert (http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/blueplanet/alert/alert.html)
- SciTech Daily Review
(http://www.scitechdaily.com/) has summaries and links to all the important
science news on the Web. It's as if somebody else went through and picked
all the good articles on the Web for you. I really recommend it.
- NewScientist
(http://www.newscientist.co.uk/), a British science journal, is good because
the articles are up-to-date and fun to read.
- The BBC
News Sci/Tech page has good stories, also with an international focus.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/default.stm
- Nature's Science Update
(http://www.nature.com/nsu/) has interesting articles which aren't the same
as other sources.
- CNN Science
and Technology (http://www.cnn.com/TECH/index.html) has good reporting
but it isn't quite as easy to find articles as on ABCNews.com.
- EurekAlert!
(http://www.eurekalert.org/pubnews.php) gives brief news releases about current
science news. Very up-to-date, but brief, and no way of telling how
good the research is.
- Science@NASA (http://science.nasa.gov/)
is obviously only about space science news, but if you're interested in space
it's a great site. Just remember that the news articles are written
by people who work for NASA, so obviously they will tend to give more of the
"good news" and less of the "bad news."
- ScienceNews (http://www.sciencenews.org/),
a weekly science newsmagazine, gives the full text of some of its articles
on its web site.
- Space.com
has a good news section; like Science@NASA it is only about space science.
- Los Angeles
Times Science (http://www.latimes.com/news/science/) has very good articles
but they tend to be written for adults.
- Discover Magazine (http://www.discover.com)
has great articles, and at the end of the articles it gives other Internet
links for further information.
